A triathlon with a twistMy Way or The Tri Way.

Swim, bike, run. In any order you like.

12Possible race orders
~800Racers in the final year
1Of a kind, as far as anyone could tell

The real problem

Triathlons always run in the same order. Swim, bike, run, every race, every time. Great for tradition. A little samey for everyone else.

What I noticed

Nobody had questioned the order. Shuffle it and a familiar race becomes a brand new puzzle, even for people who had done a dozen of them.

The call I made

Let the racers choose. My Way or The Tri Way offered 12 possible race orders, and as far as anyone could tell, it was the only race of its kind.

What I built

The whole event, from the ground up, as Founder and Race Director. Venue negotiation, permitting, course design, safety management, volunteer coordination, sponsorship, registration and all of the marketing.

The words

What if it wasn't swim-bike-run?
Sponsorship proposal
The race consists of an 800 yard swim, 14 mile bike and 4 mile run, in any order the participants choose! The concept arose after hearing many triathletes ask "What if it wasn't swim-bike-run?" And now finally they have the opportunity to find out.
Sponsorship proposal, 2008
Over the past 5 years, we have grown from a small, quirky triathlon into one of the most well-known and best supported races in the area. Aside from the great course and unique race structure, people have kept coming back every year for the fun nature of the event, great organization and superb sponsors! Participants love the race atmosphere and spectators really enjoy cheering everyone on.
Sponsorship proposal, 2008

What happened

Nearly 800 people showed up in the final year, and I sold the race in 2008.

The lesson

Question the rule everyone else follows. Sometimes that is the whole idea.
